After countless hours of design, rendering, and testing, the Research Lab Ribbon Burner: Blower and Mixer is finally ready to meet the world. This all-in-one unit has been developed over several years, undergoing fine-tuning to ensure safety, reliability, and ergonomic ease — and now it’s ready to serve the neon community.

Why We Made It

This project began with a simple goal: to make ribbon burner systems safer and more accessible. Many  DIY blower-mixer designs carry hidden risks, especially for those new to neon who might not see the nuance in their construction. One of the biggest issues is the potential for propane gas to be blown back through the blower — a situation no one wants, especially in a public studio.

The Research Lab Blower and Mixer addresses that concern with a reliable gas mixer that inserts gas above the blower, eliminating the risks of running gas through electrical components. It’s a smarter, safer design built for both learning environments and professional use.

Who It’s For

This system is designed for beginners, experienced neon benders, and public institutions that need mobility and flexibility. From my own experience setting up the neon studio at the Pittsburgh Glass Center, I learned that finding a complete ribbon burner setup is often a scavenger hunt — there are usually plenty of burner heads, but intact mixers are rare.

Our goal was to create something compact, affordable, and adaptable — something that can move easily between demonstrations, residencies, or classroom environments without sacrificing safety or performance.

What Makes It Unique

At the heart of this unit is a simple venturi mixing system built directly into the mixing tube. It also includes a 3D-printable adapter, so when the blower eventually needs replacing, you can easily adapt it to a new model — keeping your setup current without a full rebuild.

And we’re not stopping there: upcoming accessories like an automatic spark lighter are already in development, continuing our commitment to community-driven innovation in neon.
